This page is meant to help intermediate to advanced brass and woodwind musicians better understand the intonation tendencies of their instrument and gives suggestions on how to fix them. Also, this website explores equal and just intonation and ideas on how to use your natural tuning tendencies to work with what keys you normally play in.
How to use this site:
Each page:
- General Intonation explains what it means to be flat or sharp, how to use a tuner, just vs equal temperament, and external factors on intonation as it relates to playing a brass or woodwind instrument.
- Tuning Tendencies page shows how to form an embouchure, what intonation tendencies your instrument might have, how to fix them, and much more.
- The Practice Page has drones to practice scales with, aural tests to practice hearing sharp or flat pitches, a blank pitch tendency chart to help analyze your own instruments intonation, and a chorale that you can play along with to practice your just intonation and correcting out of tune notes.
Use the menu button at the top to navigate to a specific page or click this button at the bottom to follow the steps listed above through the site. To go directly to a specific instrument go to TUNING TENDENCIES to select your instrument.
